I doubt the protect him. It would make more sense to protect Manning. With MacDonald his contract provides the protection and if he gets taken, you just shrug your shoulders and say "enjoy Vegas".

If MacDonald gets taken and I was Hextall I would try to sign Alzner. We need a solid stay at home d-man that excels in the defensive zone. He would be the perfect partner for Provorov and also provide Morin with a nice mentor.

The Philadelphia Flyers are planning to keep the No. 2 overall draft pick in June's draft, meaning either Nolan Patrick or Nico Hischier will likely be heading to the City of Brotherly Love.

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said Monday the team will listen to offers, but are unlikely to make a trade after moving up 11 spots in the draft lottery.

“I expect to pick,” Hextall said, per the Courier Post. “I don’t expect to move it, but never say never. We’d be doing the organization a disservice by not listening. We’ll listen and if something intriguing comes up we’ll talk about it, but I would anticipate making the pick.

"We better get the first or second-best player in the draft if we do make the pick. That’s obviously what you’re obviously trying to do. It’s not a perfect science, but I’m comfortable that our (scouts) have done their work.”

Patrick and Hischier are widely considered the top two talents in this year's draft, though both come with their fair share of question marks. For Patrick, a history of injuries, including a twice-broken collarbone, is atop the list.

“An injury history on any player you look at whether you’re making a trade, free agent, the draft,” Hextall said. “And then it comes down to the types of injuries and what precipitated the injuries. Is a player injury prone? Is it bad luck? Was he diagnosed properly? There’s so many things that go into it. We’ll do our due diligence with (Patrick) and other players as well.”

Last month, TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie surveyed 23 scouts on who was the top prospect in this year's draft, 12 said Patrick, while 11 responded Hischier.

Hextall said Monday he won't commit to the team's top pick playing for the Flyers next season.

“We all like to think we know (whether a pick will be NHL-ready)," Hextall said. "But until the kid comes in and shows you what he can do, you don’t know. You make an educated judgement and then you go from there, but in the end the players have to prove that they’re ready and there’s not a lot that are at that age (whether) first overall, second overall, third overall. We’ll wait and see which way everything goes there.”

Despite the deadheat atop the draft broad, Hextall said the team will at least consider the other options in the draft. It's worth noting that one of the 12 scouts surveyed by McKenzie who had Patrick ranked first had Finnish defenceman Miro Heiskanen at No. 2 and Hischier at No. 3.

“We’ve got our (amateur scouting) meetings coming up, but we’re not going to leave any stone unturned,” Hextall said. “That would be silly. There’s some good players. There’s not just two good players in this draft. There’s some other good players.”

That's what I like to hear!

Alzner would be perfect for us. Going from his current 2.8 to 4.5mil sounds good. He'd make a nice 1st pairing with Provo. Leaves Goat and Gudas as second pairing and either Sanheim or Morin on third pairing. Tyutin or Quincey for 2-3mil would make a nice third pairing veteran too.
