  • Flyers/Phantoms sign Kaspar

The Flyers have made another signing who looks like he could be an impact player at the AHL level.

The organization added left winger Lukas Kaspar on Tuesday. Kaspar, from the Czech Republic, split time with the Worcester Sharks in the AHL and San Jose in the NHL last season. In 65 AHL*games, he scored 17 goals and had 44 points. In 13 NHL games, he scored two goals.

Kaspar, 24, came into the league as a top prospect. He was the 22nd overall pick in 2004 by San Jose. He’s played the bulk of the last four seasons in the AHL, scoring 17 goals twice.

Along with Krystofer Kolanos, he’s another low-risk, high-reward add for the Flyers organization. At worst, he’s a guy who can put up 20-plus goals for the Phantoms. At best, he can compete for a spot on the NHL roster or be a quality call up in case of injury.

It’s extremely early, but you have to like the fact that they Flyers have added four or five proven AHL players over the last few weeks. Coupled with guys already on the roster like Andreas Nodl, there’s going to be some good training camp competition for a spot or two on the Flyers, with the Phantoms getting the rest.
