  • Pennsylvania arena for Phantoms takes a step forward?

The Allentown Morning Call reported on Thursday that a site has tentatively been chosen for the Lehigh Valley arena that may be the future home of the Phantoms.

The proposed*location for the $80 million arena is along the Allentown waterfront. The*competing proposal called for an*arena*on the grounds of the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pa. Reportedly, that*plan remains on the table should the Allentown proposal fall through.

While this seems like a step toward the building of the arena — and perhaps the Phantoms following — here is the paragraph that makes this sound to me as if it’s still a long ways off:

Perhaps the biggest hurdle is that budget problems prevent the city and Lehigh County from contributing to the $80 million needed to build the arena. Developers say they’ll kick in 20 percent, but with the state facing a budget deficit, there may be no money to add.

The Brooks Group, which owns the Phantoms,*declined comment, saying it would be premature to comment in advance of the August 1 deadline set for Lehigh Valley officials to present plans for the arena.
