  • Gilbert to be first coach of Adirondack Phantoms (update 1)

Greg Gilbert has been named head coach of the Adirondack*Phantoms.

The Flyers said they wanted experience, and in Gilbert, they’ve got it.

Gilbert, 47,*coached the Toronto Marlies for the last three seasons, posting a 123-89-10-18 record. In his second season, the Marlies reached the Western Conference Finals. Toronto did not renew his contract at the end of last season.

Previously, Gilbert coached Worcester in the AHL for three seasons (1996-97 to 99-00). He’s coached 560 games in the AHL, winning 268 of them.

He also has NHL head coaching experience, leading Calgary for parts of three seasons following his stint with Worcester, posting a 42-56-23 record.

Gilbert played more than 800 games in the NHL and is the only person to win a Stanley Cup with both the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers.

    Stay tuned for more updates.
