  • Flyers/Phantoms announce four signings

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Tuesday that they signed defenseman Danny Syvret to a one-year contract, center Zac Rinaldo to a three-year entry-level contract and goaltender Nicola Riopel and defenseman David Sloane to one-year AHL contracts.

Syvret, 24, was a Phantoms mainstay last season. He recorded career high in points (57), goals (12) and assists and represented the Phantoms in the AHL all-star game.

Sloane, 24, played one game with the Flyers last year as an emergency fill in after playing four seasons at Colgate. He also played one game for the Phantoms. Sloane scored 10 goals in 129 career collegiate games. Pretty cool story about Sloane, the first*player*born in the immediate Philadelphia*area to suit up for the Flyers. You can read about it here. He grew up in Ambler, just outside the city limits, and his family owns a prominent chain of car dealerships in Philly.

Rinaldo, a sixth-round pick of the Flyers in 2008, played in the Ontario Hockey League last season, accumulating 30 points and 201 penalty minutes in 56 games.*

I wrote about Riopel’s signing on Monday, but here’s the basics again. A fifth round pick by the Flyers this season,*the 20-year-old*was the MVP of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season. Playing for Moncton, he put up a 43-15 record last year with a 2.01 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. The 2.01 GAA was a new record in the QMJHL. Look for him and Johan Backlund to compete for the starter’s job. Riopel was a fifth round pick in the draft this spring.
