  • Flyers send Backlund to the Phantoms

Well, well. Friday’s preaseason game may have just gotten a bit more interesting.

Late Thursday evening the Flyers assigned Sweedish goalie Johan Backlund to the Phantoms. No word on whether Backlund, the presumed Phantoms No. 1, will make it in time to play Friday night. If not, he’ll there’s always Saturday. Greg Gilbert seemed to hint on Thursday that a move might be coming before the weekend.

Backlund, 28, is a veteran in the Sweedish elite league. He has yet to make a regular-season start in North America. He stopped 14 of 16 shots in a Flyers exhibition last week.

Per the Flyers press release: “”Backlund signed a one-year contract with the Flyers on March 26 after he appeared in 49 games with Timra of the Swedish Elite League last season, where he posted a 2.56 goals-against average, .907 save percentage and four shutouts. He has spent the last three seasons with Timra (2006-07 through 2008-09), registering a 2.32 GAA, .909 save percentage and 16 shutouts in 145 games.”

Backlund joins Nic Riopel, Michael Teslak and Jeremy Duchesne in camp.
