  • Phantoms struggle in Syracuse

No matter how you look at it, not many (or any) positives to be found in the Phantoms 6-1 loss to Syracuse on Saturday night at Onondoga County War Memorial.

Lukas Kaspar scored the first goal less than two minutes in, but the Cruch got the next, all by different players. Four of those came in the second period, when the Phantoms gave up the tying and go ahead goal 13 seconds apart.

Johan Backlund started for the second straight night and stopped 31 of 36 shots.

A few quick hits inferred from listening to the broadcast on Q-101.7 FM and looking at the box score:

    – Baby No. 2 of the season has arrived. Phantoms defenseman Joey Mormina left the team early Saturday morning to join his wife in Boston where she was deliviering their first child. Congratulations to the Mormina family.

    – Jason Ward, whose wife gave birth to their fifth child earlier in the week, missed his second consecutive game.

    – The Phantoms again dressed seven defenseman (something I’ll ask about at practice this week). The scratches were: Joonas Lehtivouri, Joey Mormina, Jason Ward and Rob Bellamy.

    – Defenseman Logan Stephenson made his Phantoms debut.

    – Jon Kalinski is the only Phantom with points in each of the first three games.

–Matt Clackson had two bouts on Saturday night, including a tilt with the Crunch’s big-time tough guy Jon Mirasty.
